Responding to the Autumn Budget, Rachael Wardell OBE, President of the Association of Directors of Children’s Services, said:
“The end to the two-child benefit cap will lift more than half a million children out of poverty overnight and provide much-needed relief for struggling families and the services who support them. This is a very welcome move, which we have been calling for nearly a decade.
“This act alone won’t resolve the child poverty crisis, but it paves the way for what will hopefully be a new, ambitious child poverty reduction strategy that includes wider changes to conflicting welfare, health, employment, housing and immigration policies, in order to address the complex social issues which, contribute to child poverty.
“We need to eradicate child poverty if we are to create a society that is based on the principles of social justice and recognises and values the significance of childhood for all children. The extra funding announced for school libraries and playgrounds will also help improve childhood experiences.”
